This October the American Dentist Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company are teaming up during National Dental Hygiene Month. Both the ADHA and the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) are motivated to increase public awareness about the important of maintaining good oral health. The focus of this year’s National Dental Hygiene Month is centered on the four components of good oral health maintenance. These four components are made up of:
Brush twice a day. Take the time to brush your teeth really well. Dental professionals suggest brushing at least two minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hold it at a 45-degree angle and gently scrub your teeth in a gentle circular motion.
Floss every day. It may seem like a chore, but flossing helps remove food particles stuck in between your teeth that brushing can’t exactly reach. Use a long piece of floss, wrap it around your fingers and slide it in between each tooth after you eat or brush.
Use mouthwash. Rinsing your mouth out helps to loosen anything stuck in between your teeth. Some rinse before the brush, some wait until after. It doesn’t really matter – Make sure you use an ADA-approved mouthwash.
Chew sugar-free gum. Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after each meal helps prevent tooth decay by promoting saliva production. Saliva is our body’s natural cleanser to rinse away sugars that remain in our mouths after meals. The more you produce, the cleaner your mouth is.
